AFitz pottery

The work I create is a meditation on memories and experiences, hopes and desires. By its repetitive nature, the medium of clay is a meditative process in its own right and I apply the experience throughout the entire making process. I am interested in awareness of self and how one’s experiences shape their personality and worldview. I choose to create functional work because the connection between object and memory is strong – it can ground our pivotal moments in ways more concrete than memory on its own. The desire to create those lodestones through clay and storytelling fuels my practice and stories.

As a way of creative storytelling I use animal characters to tell the stories that I wish to engage my audience in. Through the vehicle of storytelling I hope to create a moment of thoughtfulness and meditation, bringing my audience full circle to the core of my making practice. We are all connected in our moments of growth no matter how varied the direct causes of them may be, and my work should be used as a catalyst for that exploration of connectedness.

Amy lydia arts

Amy makes jewelry out of her home studio in Katonah; her primary medium is enamel, which she uses to craft pieces inspired by nature. She also does metalwork, torch-fusing fine silver into organic shapes, and some work in kiln-fused glass, echoing her enamel jewelry in a larger form. Amy began taking metal workshops in 2016, but was a full-time high school teacher until 2019 so wasn’t able to devote the time she wanted. In 2020 she found enameling and fell in love; she now spends most of her time in her studio.

marvalina

Originally from Croton-on-Hudson, NY and now living in Providence RI, I find my subject matter for my fabrics in abandon and deteriorating spaces.  Because these spaces have been left to crumble on their own, the texture and color created by the passing of time are viscerally and inexplicably stimulating.  They become the raw resources for my bespoke textile collection.  In the studio I use a potato starch resist to express these textures onto cloth.  In addition to the starch resist, I also painted directly onto cloth and use a variety of shibori techniques to assist in representing my findings.

Expanding on what I have learned the past 18 years as co-owner of Moon Tide Dyers, a handmade and dyed clothing brand, I continue to create everyday wearables for the individual.  The brand, Marvalina, is my new adventure as an archaeologist of texture and color, capturing the passing of time on cloth.  Marvalina’s collection consists of simple, everyday garments that are soft, washable, and you will look and feel great in.

CHEYENNE MALLO POTTERY

Cheyenne and Zac make functional pottery that features maps of mountains, hiking trails and rivers. They love hiking and exploring natural landscapes, and their work allows them to share their enthusiasm for the outdoors with fellow adventurers. They hope that each piece will serve as an everyday reminder of a past adventure, a special location, or a future hiking plan. Cheyenne grew up in rural Wisconsin and moved to the Hudson Valley in 2011, where she transitioned from printmaking to clay. Zac, a native of the Hudson Valley, joined in late 2018. They currently maintain a home studio in Olivebridge, NY, near the Catskill Mountains.

Jeneric Bags

Jennifer Larrabee is a Fiber Artist living in Cortlandt Manor, NY. Although a lifelong crafter, her quilting journey only began in 2006. She was going to buy a gift for a baby shower, when her son, then 3 years old said “You should make the new baby a quilt, like your friend made for me”. Knowing nothing about quilting, with her best scissors being gardening shears, and not really even sure how to use a sewing machine, Jennifer responded “OK”. A frustrating week later, with no instruction, she had made a quilt, and acquired an addiction. Since then, Jennifer has read books, taken workshops, upgraded her equipment, and amassed an astonishing stash of fabric.

SMOKETREE FORGE

Leon Husock grew up in Brookline, MA. After graduating from Bard College in the Hudson Valley, he worked for a few years as a literary agent. During this time a lifelong love of fantasy books and interest in blacksmithing led him to take classes with Marsha Trattner of She-Weld in Brooklyn, and it wasn't long before he realized that he loved forging and enjoyed working with his hands far more than working on a computer. He has been a full-time blacksmith and bladesmith since 2018.

Smoketree Forge will be demonstrating his techniques and sharpening knives during the spring crawl. Bring your knives and get them sharpened for $10 each!

maxine young photography

I have been a wildlife and nature photographer since the 1970’s when I was a Peace Corps Volunteer in Cameroon, West Africa. It was there that I fell in love with Africa, and all the rich beauty it has to offer. I go back often, but also am amazed at how lucky we are to be in the Hudson Valley.
